Travelling around the world

So I've been reading this book by Jim Rogers
his second guiness world record-breaking trip round the world
on this super-modified one-&-only mercedes roadster..
As a successful economist, he gave such open, n straight views
of every single country he drove thru,
their bureaucracy, governing sectors, financial situations etc...

Ive been reading it for a while
n following him on his adventure as he drove thru war zones, deserts, jungles, epidemics
he's had many narrow escapes from earthquakes, civil wars
he had to deal with the severely strict customs esp in Pakistan, India
he's concluded the 21st century belongs to China
and that the Euro is doomed to fail
and India, like many other nations, will break into several countries.
(North, south India do not care or bother abt wat they each other do,
neither do their government)...

'Japan is the richest country in the world, a country supposedly technologically ahead of every other, yet travelling its motorways, driving its toll roads, you will discover that in the gas stations, the use of credit cards is encouraged - only those drawn on Japanese banks are accepted..'

'I am convinced that the Japanese economy has hit a bottom. the suicide rate is the highest in recorded history, the birthrate is lowest. People are refraining from having children becos they are economically fearful. If the trend continues, its population will be reduced half well before the end of the century. The country has one of the world's highest internal debt, continues to grow while the number of people necessary to pay it off continues to shrink. The same demographic prevails in Europe, bt of course the Europeans have nothing on the Japanese when it comes to discouraging immigration.'

'The penalties of alcohol possession in Saudi Arabia are imprisonment, exile or flogging, 80 lashes being what is actually specified in strict Muslim countries.(the penalty of drug trafficking is beheading. No questions, they just chop it off without even notifying your ambassador.)

'There are now something like 20,000 princes in the royal family of Saudi Arabia. Polygamy is customary, n havng numerous children is the norm. (Osama bin laden's father had more than 50 children WOHO~~hahahahhaha). The saudi govt funds all of these princes with 6-fig annual salaries. '

'With an enormously high living standard, Singapore is perhaps the greatest success story of the developed world in the past 40 years. You will not find another city in the world that is as rich and safe as Singapore. We all know the horror stories about Singapore, how you have a particular haircut (?!!!), how you cannot spit on the sidewalk, how chewing gum n smoking are seriously discouraged, n how you can be caned for minor offenses. We can debate what many see as the Prime Minister's horribly repressive approach to govt. But no matter how horrible you think he might be, there a lot of dictatios around the world far more repressive than he and who do not have anything to show for it. '

'Singapore has the highest savings and investment rate of any country in the world (the U.S., by contrast, had a negative savings rate once) Lee spent huge amt on eudcation. With an educated workforce, the best educated in the region and perhaps the world , the country was able to ascend to a position of power in Asia. Singapore has the 3rd highest foreign currency reserves in the world, nxt to Japan and China, with huge populations.'

'While the Irish were making sure everyone learned to speak Gaelic and Iceland was mandating that its schoolchildren learn Danish, Lee was insisting that everyone speak Chinese and English. '

It fascinates me how he looks at the whole
from an economic perspective
I've never been a practical person
I love to see the world from a natural point of view
but well, it sure astonishes me...

The White Masai

Based on a true story, The White Masai combines adventure and the pursuit of passion in a story of two star-crossed lovers from vastly different backgrounds. Corinne, a European entrepreneur, meets Lketinga, a Samburu warrior, while on vacation in Mombasa on Kenya's glamorous coast.Despite language and cultural barriers, they embark on an impossible love affair. Corinne uproots her life to move to Africa—not the romantic Africa of popular culture, but the Africa of the Masai, in the middle of the isolated bush, where five-foot-tall huts made from cow dung serve as homes. Undaunted by wild animals, hunger, and bouts with tropical diseases, she tries to forge a life with Lketinga. But slowly the dream starts to crumble when she can no longer ignore the chasm between their two vastly different cultures.

I can't wait to see this movie tmr!
i cant wait to be overwhelmed by the visual beauty of the great wilderness of Kenya...
i cant wait to be intrigued by the love that brings together 2 pple from vastly different backgrd
i cant wait to be enchanted by the culture of the Masai tribe of Africa..

Chupitos & Mojitos

So saturday nite was spent downing free chupitos (shots)
and expensive Mojitos...
Melinda's back!!! ha!
my only fren in Madrid is back
hence the enthusiasm.
Nonetheless, we had fun with Alberto
roaming the streets of Madrid
around our favourite haunt, Sol
scavaging bars for free shots...
we ended up at a Mexican bar
where we met this British girl n her spanish frens
she was frenly n all, started talking to me at the bar
so we had some gd time drinking Mojitos n sharing a laugh...

Melinda n me

Tuesday nite was superb...
we went for a night of Intercambio (exchange) of languages in an Irish pub
my gay-lookalike *i assume he's gay* classmate came along
the dutch boy was talking to strangers with the blink of an eye..
Melinda's classmates were all cool chicks
there were lotsa them, Scottish, American, Swedish
all pretty frenly pple
there were many Spanish pple who came up just to talk
ahh extremely frenly, i must say

there was this bald guy who went ard
giving invites for an international party of the weekend
Apparently free flow of alcohol for us, with the invites, for free
so I questioned that
n he gave me an answer as such:
'Yes it's free, if u promise to make love to me for 5 hrs'
argh.eeuukk.i do not find it farnie.

The Music in my life

Just put up a song on my blog
by Chambao..
she has some cool Flamenco chill songs
I really like her style
anyhow, been listening to some Spanish music
these days n I've been charmed...

I realise how I listen to different types of music
at different stages of life..
I've never been a huge fan of music
but it still played an impt part
in my life, n everyone else's i wld think so.

Listening to Aerosmith's 'Crazy',
brings me back to that night
as I crossed the Brooklyn Bridge in NewYork
on a tiny bus from Boston
I missed everything so badly then
Alberto, Miami,
and it brought out so much feelings in me...

Then it was a whole collection of hiphop songs
that reminded me of days in Miami
Outkast's 'The way you move',
Beyonce, Lil' Jon, Busta Rhymes..
they all represented this beautiful part of my life
when we boogeyed n partied n had the best time

Janet Jackson's 'That's the way Love goes',
Soul music acompanied me thru the days of emptiness
as well as soul-searching
it brought back my soul n my senses.

Then there was a period of head-banging rock
Green Day's 'Wake me up when Sept ends',
Hoobastank's 'The Reason', n 3 Doors down's 'Here without you'
they were some juvenile happy times
partied n drank with my fav group of frens n sister

Now Ive been indulging in some latin music
Alejandro Sanz 'a la primera persona'
Amaral, Julieta Venegas...
make me think of my frens here in Madrid
n the fun n laughter we had...

Life Stories

So much happened today
that I decided to sacrifice my friday nite
writing some interesting stuff...

Met a new student today
a rich executive riding his pussy-magnet Alfa Romeo roadster
yes, i got a ride to his bachelor pad heh
Hard to imagine how people are interested
in our traditional Mandarin language!
apparently he is genuinely interested in the language
n he's so keen to learn
i declare him my best student.

Upon leaving the apt,
I asked ard for directions to the metro station
started talking to this Bulgarian middleaged woman
she looked all haggard, tired n sick of life.
she talked to me alot,
about how she hates living in Madrid
how life has been so expensive after the Euro came upon,
how little they earned in Bulgaria n how she misses her son
these experiences always stay in my mind
for a while..n make me ponder alot
Different aspects of life make me bewildered..

I recall the old Chinese lady i talked to on a bus in San Francisco
she ended up bringing me all over Chinatown
bought me buns, told me her life story, her sons
and how she escaped to America from China...
I'll probably remember her for a long while.
I learnt alot, from just listening ...

These days Ive been spending lotsa time on the Metro
travelling from one class to the nxt
I've come to realise there is no escaping the morning rushes
peak hours spent squeezing into the Metro
sweating in my winter coats,
while shivering the minute i step outta the station
Life everywhere in the world is like that
(unless i move to the suburbs n be a housewife,
or have a car! *lucky bastard alberto*)
So I start to tell myself to enjoy the ride
By the way, Madrid has got one of the best Metro system ive seen
Singapore being the best HONESTLY, n Hongkong maybe
(NewYork's was a slump, London was a shit
the tube was suspended 200 out of the 365days in a year,
despite them being the first underground transport systems in the world)

This morning was as usual,
every inch of space in the metro taken up
all of me squashed up into a tiny corner
every single urban dweller wearing a frown on his face
n we all marched on reluctantly to make a living...
But today they brought a smile to my face.
An old man with a walking stick squeezed into the crowd
but immediately someone gave up his seat
not only that, everyone squashed doubly
to make a path for him
it was like a phenomenal thing for me
not that it doesnt happen anywhere else,
but it just made the world seem more beautiful at that moment.
You might not understand,
but these lil things make life better, dont u think?

Anyhow,
Another odd thing happened at the commissionary place i went
for some visa application thingy i needed for work
so there I was, waiting in line
when I heard this American flaring up, while arguing with the officer
he started asking if anyone spoke English
everyone stared with wide eyes,
while I, out of the blue, stood out timidly
n tried to help with my broken Spanish
So i kinda did, bt not too much,
the pissed-off American ended up thanking me,
n bid farewell to the officer with 'You'r such a cunt!'
LOL.
Right, so the minute I stepped outta the commissionary
this Chinese man came up to me
n asked me if I spoke Mandarin to help translate
I said a weird yes, haha,
n tried to find out what they wanted me to do
I ended up using my broken spanish to talk to the officer
Meanwhile, another Chinese woman came up to me
asking for help again!
So imagine me, stuck infronta the commissionary
acting as a translator for godknows who..
so it was kinda weird,
althou I didnt manage to help much
But it felt great
to be of help to people.

today's been a bad day for Alberto thou
he had a minor car accident on his way to work!
just a slight bang but im glad he's fine ;)

oh n he bought a Playstation
n Im officially his second love

oh n we wanted to go Venice for Valentines' Day
but alas, we decided off it,
I realised our downfall (financial) in London
was due to my incessant urge to travel
so no more of that, Im gonna meet my saving plan for 2007!

Au Revoir to all
Miho is coming to Madrid end Jan!
Xindi KK I'll be waiting for u guys in May too!!!
Bring some instant noodles for me pls!

1st working day of the year

So here in Spain,
everyone starts work only on the 8th Jan.
How lucky.
here I am,
lazing in btw classes.
Yes, still waitin for some classes to start.

Yesterday the skies were dark
shiveringly cold winter
it felt like london again
but the skies wld clear soon
n the sun wld appear again,
like it always does, in Spain...

So last wkend was superb
it was the 3 Kings' Day here
~ the 3 wise men in Bethlehem
who gave presents to Jesus after he was bornt
it's the most celebrated day in Spain, all yr round
everyone gets ready the nite before
n hides presents for ur family..

I got lotsa presents from Alberto & his family
that realli surprised me,
n it made me soo touched
it realli feels like my second home in Granada
Alberto's mum gave me a huge cosmetic set
(variety of eyeshadow, lip gloss etc),
a watch (!! i needed it!!) and a pair of winter stockings.
His sister gave me this grey furry jacket
(yes i look like a gorilla in it, bt i love it)
Alberto gave me a wallet (yes i lost it, remember),
a brown leather bag (!!!),
my long-timed dream bottle (those alcoholic silver ones)
and sth ive always liked - an artesanic framed mirror
His father's fren gave me a silver jingling bracelet lol..

Awwww...

Alberto got a TV from his parents lol..
*not to forget his car as a present from his mum*
I gave him a bow and arrow (red Indian style)
-he likes cool weird stuff-
n a army knife, n a tricky game

I love this 3 kings day!
I almost forgot how it felt
to be a kid again
with all the presents
and festive feel...

The Holiday

'Sometimes in life, you go to a new place,
and u meet people who make u feel worthwhile again..'

it's really true
how unwanted and down u feel
a change of environment can make anything happen..

Havent watched a movie in awhile,
Alberto n I decided to catch this to feel alil Xmas atmosphere
Didnt expect anything more than a corny xmas flick,
but it turned out realli beautiful...

Simple, romantic n beautiful.
It made me feel so much..
u know how it just makes u feel that twitch inside u
that feeling of excitement, heart-pumping..

the movie's set in London and Los Angeles
maybe that's wat made me feel alot as well
it showed the beautiful differences btw the two
American vs English
the beauty of their accents n humour..
Love between two strangers from different parts of the world..
n the freedom of doing wat u like, on a holiday.
when u dunno when u'r gonna see him again..
that unknown makes u run free..

Its been 3 yrs with Alberto
n I still look forward to seein him after work
to kissing him nonstop
to laugh in bed..

But sometimes dont u just wish
everyday could be like the first day u met
the first day u kissed
the first day u fell in love..
I never believed in long lasting love
but who knows?
u just hafta wait n see it for urself, isnt it?

XMas & New Yr 2007

Yes the new year's here
2nd Xmas in Granada
with Alberto n his family.
We spent a whole week in Granada with his family.
Look at this family photo of his,
woa his uncles, aunties all flooded in on Xmas
n it was great fun,
big feasting, laughter n family fun.
I miss my family....

they were so nice to me,
Spanish are generally v receptive to foreigners
not to mention me being Chinese
obviously v different from them.
It was a real nice dinner
I was touched by how they all took care
of his grandma..

IVAR ( home-alone no more!)
oops u know wat I mean Ivar..LOL
the white boy came over to visit Damien
n we didnt stop drinking
until he went back!
yes he's become a fullblown alcoholic
welcome to the AA club..

he made us laugh so much
Alberto n I always have so much fun with him around
if only he came to Madrid to study spanish
instead of barcelona
hah! serves u rite for having no frens!
*ok i take that back*

the loonies playing it out on futbolling
so funny to see them so engrossed
in a silly football match.

Nxt day, obviously hungover
we climbed up to the Mirador
for the beautiful views of Granada

Our dream bar
so I brought Alberto to this jap tapas bar Mariko recommended
we both felt the urge to set up a bar just like this!
the tapas were realli good, jap teriyaki
the owners were a jap-russian couple
i talked to the jap girl
n was realli nice to see how they entertain their customers
how the bar's small, so its kept to a cosy, chillout spot
me & Alberto have a new dream now!
we'r working towards end of 2008.
a bar of our dreams.

I met Mariko for some shopping
n tapas at another Sushi bar
free sushi as tapas!!
the chicken teriyaki n tempura was supergood!
I'm so excited abt her new rendezvous lol..

Saturday we went to see a musical
Peter Pan
Alberto's mother treated all of us to the show
the whole theatre was full..
n it was pretty good, my first time at a musical.

NEW YEAR'S EVE
SIERRA NEVADA!!

Highest mountain in Spain,
I love the drive up there
the snow, with the sun shining on it
it does feel alil like heaven...

this was probably my favourite day
I loved how it was so naturally beautiful
nothing can alter that
Nature's wat home lacks.

Busking in the sun and snow!
We rented a sledge to ride down the slopes
was so much fun!!
wanted to do this back in Lake Tahoe, Nevada
but I was alone n no one to play with
Finally I get to do this with Alberto!
but he hurt his ass when we bumped on a rock hehe

Chilling under the sun
in the snow
I cant get over the fact how it felt so warm
amidst the snow...

New Yr's eve dinner
So Spanish has got a feasting tradition
Dinner's supposed to be even grander this time round
so I had my huge share of
big prawns,lamb chops, beef etc
awww the food was magnificent!

the clock striked 12o'clock
as we followed the spanish tradition
n popped 12 grapes,
1 at each dong of the bell
it was a great experience, i guess..lol
was so nice to have his family around

Bad thing was I fell sick after
n had to leave awhile at the New Yr's party
with Alberto's frens
I didnt feel too good
n didnt like his cousin much
sigh was a real lousy new yr's eve night
hope 2007's gonna be good thou!
Im sure it will.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all my dear frens..;)

P.S The holidays are not over yet
there's still the 3 kings' day this wkend
it's supposed to be the biggest festival in Spain
bigger than Xmas
so I cannot imagine how its gonna be like!
